Hey, I’m Alicia
I’m a social worker that’s been working with people living with chronic illnesses for more than 20 years (I was a fetus when I started. I promise).
My dad was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis when I was a teenager and that really sparked my passion for working with these communities. I started focusing on IBD about 7 years ago and I’ve absolutely loved getting to know and be part of this community! All of the people living with IBD are so resilient, passionate, and interesting and all of the healthcare providers are so smart, funny, invested, and committed. Best of all, this community is the reason that I met and had the privilege of making friends with Robin! I could not have asked for a better co-host and ride-or-die and creating and producing this podcast has been SO much fun.
What am I
Drinking?
I have lots of favorites!
But if I’m forced to choose, my absolute favorite cocktail is a French 75 which is champagne, lemon juice, gin, and simple syrup. I also love a Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand and would move there in a hot minute to work in a vineyard if it was offered. Sadly none of the wineries have called me to offer me a position yet. For non-alcoholic beverages, I’m often drinking sparkling water, a latte, or tea.
What do I do for fun
when I’m not podcasting?
TRAVEL
I typed that loudly on purpose! I took my first international trip as part of a cultural exchange when I was 16 and it’s been a passion for me ever since. My husband, Phil’s job has created opportunities for us to see several countries and we also just love to go for fun. I also love to ski, hike, do pilates and yoga, read, learn new things, and spend time with my husband and family. We lost our sweet dog, Ozzy in 2022 but I love dogs so much so that will be part of our lives in the future. In the meantime I pet all the dogs I meet and have basically no boundaries with them. I’m also really active as a volunteer with the National MS Society on the Government Relations Advisory Committee, Community Council, and the planning committee for HikeMS in Keystone, CO!
Fun Facts
About Me
What’s the one thing I want the
IBD community to know?
You’re the captain of your healthcare team!
You need to have a gastroenterologist who you trust and who you feel is helping you make the best decisions for you. That may mean that you have to get second opinions or try other providers if you don’t feel like you and your doctor are partners. Also, if at all possible, involve all those other providers that will help make your life and care better. Living with a lifelong chronic illness can be daunting and you may need guidance and help along the way so having providers like a knowledgeable Dietitian, a therapist who understands chronic illness, pelvic floor physical therapist, infusion nurses, and maybe even a pharmacist that can help guide your medication choices.
